ROADTRIPPING WITH THE FRILLY

Just a few weeks ago, before all of the international travel, I had some time in my home state. California is pretty much the ultimate road tripping state, with so much to see just a few hours from home. So Eric and I packed up our van with plenty of looks by The Frilly, and started driving north.

We fell in love with the town of Los Alamos almost 6 years ago. We nearly got married there, in fact, until circumstances changed and we settled on Orange County. So when I say it's one of my favorite towns in the whole world, you best believe me. It's small, cozy, adorable, and filled with some of the most amazing new businesses. Back when we first visited, there were only a few spots dotted around, but on this trip we were able to see our old favorites plus a ton of new shops and restaurants that have popped up. All of them charming and perfectly suited to a slower life that Los Alamos offers.

Since we wanted to showcase these pieces from The Frilly, we knew it would be the perfect destination and back drop to tell the story. I've mentioned The Frilly before, but if you're new around these parts, here's your crash course; The Frilly allows you to create entirely custom looks on their website. Every single piece I'm wearing in this story was tailor made for me, and at an amazing price. I got to choose every detail - the color, the length, sleeves, belts, buttons - you name it. It means that the options are endless, and the quality is amazing, because it isn't some mass-produced line that you have to try to make fit your style. It's the other way around, in that you get to express your style by having control over the design. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of theirs.

We left in the early afternoon and arrived at The Alamo Motel in Los Alamos to check in. I love this Motel, and have stayed here quite a bit, for birthdays holidays, and just-because trips. If I'm ever feeling restless and like I need to get out of LA, The Alamo Motel is usually the answer for me. Plus, it allows me to live out my fantasy of owning a clawfoot tub mere steps from our bed. Yes please.

Like I said, Los Alamos is experiencing a bit of a boom at the moment, so we headed out of the motel to explore. The old favorites are still there, like the 1880 Union Hotel with the attached Saloon (we spent NYE there a few years back), but there's also new spots like Bodega. It's a big outdoor wine and beer bar with a cute greenhouse and plenty of seats throughout. I remember when the property was for sale a while back, and Eric and I joked about moving to the little town - kiiiinda wish we had done that now that I see what they've done with the space, but I'm happy to be able to at least visit.

I styled two iterations of the Harriet Tunic Dress, one version with no sleeves and in a sweet pale blue, and the other with long sleeves in an ivory shade. They come with a slip underneath, so they're pretty much ideal for picnicking, road-tripping, or even a backyard wedding.

After we grabbed drinks at Bodega, we headed over to the aforementioned 1880 Union Hotel. It's been there since, you guessed it, the 1800s, and is a real living piece of history. I'm partial to sitting outside and watching people walk by, but if you get a chance, pop in for an old-fashioned or bourbon of any kind. It's a really fun spot, and the interior is just as amazing as the exterior. For this spot, I styled this great jumpsuit in a navy shade with simple heels and a basket purse. I don't wear jumpsuits very often, but when I do, it's bound to be one by The Frilly, because they get the fit right every time.

In fact, I styled a few more looks around the town of Los Alamos, so if you want to see more, head to their blog here!

TALKING SUSTAINABILITY WITH BIOSSANCE

In the past few years (and more specifically in the past few months) I've started to consider my impact on the environment, specifically when it comes to what waste I produce. As a blogger, I tend to work in a more wasteful industry than most. PR packages that come in the mail often have lots of tissue and bubble wrap, and at the end of a busy week, our recycling bin is often full with cardboard boxes. There has been some improvement - some brands are getting better and I've happily watched the amount of filler and plastic packaging go down, all the while saving every single piece of tissue paper I receive to repurpose (seriously, I have a giant drawer of it). But there are still plenty of areas of my own life that needed to be looked at from the lens of environmental health, so today I'm going to talk about a change I've made gradually that is starting to become habit.

My inspiration for this post is my current partnership with my holy-grail skincare brand - Biossance. Because they think critically about not only their products, but the packaging as well, it helped me to think about the waste I create as an individual. Shopping, and particularly grocery shopping, was one of the biggest causes for waste production in my house. And while you can no longer get single-use plastic bags at grocery stores in LA, there were still plenty of things making it into the bin. Sure, I had bought reusable grocery bags years ago, but would often forget them, and walk out with paper bags full of groceries. An improvement over plastic, but still so unnecessary when the solution was just sitting in the trunk of my car, forgotten.  So I got good about using reusable grocery bags.

Once that was in the bag (so to speak) I started to look at what was actually going into the trash can when I unpacked those lovingly purchased groceries. I'm embarrassed to say, for a while, it was quite a bit. I tricked myself into thinking that by separating and washing all of my plastic and recyclable items and putting those in the blue bin that it wasn't so bad, but still - there was a lot of waste. Specifically those plastic bags you put your produce in, boxes of individual rice meals, plastic containers of pre-peeled garlic - it was a lot more than I expected.

All I have to say, is thank goodness for the internet. I don't think I would have even considered just how much plastic waste I was producing if it weren't for the mirror that is Social Media. I follow some amazing women online who have made it their mission to reduce waste and try to eliminate single use plastic from their lives. I started to take notes, and these were the solutions I reached:

Don't bag your produce at the grocery store // That thin plastic bag that is used to separate your tomatoes from your bananas? You don't need it. You can place your produce directly into your reusable bag and just bring it out at checkout. Give it a good wash when you get home, and ditch that thin plastic bag all together.

Skip the convenience items // It can be really appealing to buy a container of cut fruit or peeled garlic, but that plastic container it comes in is eventually going into a bin. Not to mention, those convenience items are oftentimes more expensive than buying a whole piece of fruit or bulbs of garlic. Please note - I still haven't been able to find asparagus without those rubber bands to hold it all together, but have found ways to reuse the rubber bands. Like shooting them at Eric. Baby steps, guys.

Buy in Bulk // If your grocery store has bulk options, always aim for those. I used to buy small bags of nuts, or boxes of rice meals, but they were so wasteful. I don't need a packet of spices and a pre-measured box of rice, when I can have a full spice rack at home and can just as easily have a large container of rice on hand. Take pictures with your cell phone of the item numbers (or write them down) so you don't have to take one of those little label twist-ties that's going to end up in the trash when you get home.

Get specific with your grocery bags // While I've always had grocery tote bags on hand, I never really thought about carrying smaller bags. Thanks to Instagram, I saw a tip about using lightweight cotton bags for purchasing bulk items. And even better, I saw the suggestion to repurpose clothing and purse dustbags for that purpose! If you have any lightweight and washable dustbags lying around, use those when you go to buy things in bulk. I say lightweight because they do weigh your bulk items, and you don't want to have to pay extra if possible. My favs are the ones pictured above from purchases at Doên. It's just a great way to reuse and you have to admit - it's a lot more visually pleasing than piles of plastic bags.

I'm so glad that I got to partner with Biossance to write this post, because they are one of my favorite brands. You guys have heard me talk about them in the past a lot - they produce some of my top must-have, holy-grail, don't-leave-home-without products. But aside from how much I love their products, what I love just as much is their commitment to what they call No Compromise Beauty. They've banned over 2000 ingredients from their products that other companies use that could either be harmful to human or to the environment, everything they make is nontoxic, and their hero ingredient - Squalane - is 100% plant-based rather than coming from shark livers. Save the sharks, y'all.

On top of their commitment to what goes into the products, they've also looked closely at how they package everything. They use recyclable components as much as possible like their outer cartons. They're actually made from sustainable sugarcane paper, which is a by-product of the same process used to produce their squalane. The inner cartons are fully recyclable because they don’t use foiling or coating that causes paper to not be recyclable. Just in the same way that individuals are thinking about how they can reduce waste, so is a large company like Biossance.

Speaking of Biossance, I'm so happy to introduce you guys to two of their latest products that I've added into my permanent routine. It's no secret that I sunburn SUPER easily. Always have, always will be sensitive to the sun. So because sunscreen is a daily necessity for me, I've tried a lot of different formulas. Plenty of options are greasy, make me breakout, or cause my makeup to just slide right off. Biossance's Squalane + Mineral SPF 45is my daily sunscreen. It blends in easily, has a high SPF, and never feels greasy or heavy.

But what I really love about it? It's environmentally friendly too. I didn't know this until recently, but most sunscreens are dangerous for our oceans. They contain micro-plastics or nano minerals that end up in the water. In fact, Hawaii entirely banned chemical sunscreen ingredients oxybenzone and
octinoxate because of their effects on the ocean. Switching to a mineral SPF is a cleaner solution for the environment and this formula is coral-reef safe!

The other product I've added to my bi-weekly routine is their Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum. I'm new to the idea of using a retinol treatment, and in truth was scared of traditional retinols which can be harsh on sensitive skin. Biossance instead uses Bakuchiol, a plant-derived, non-irritating alternative to retinol. Plus, traditional retinol is often derived from animal byproducts, so I'm happy this is a plant-based alternative that is still powerful.

It works to plump skin, and help correct skin texture. As someone who dealt with breakouts in the past, finding something that is designed to help texture is huge. I've focused on redness reduction in the past, but a big concern for me lately has been texture, especially since I shoot so many photos. This is targeted to combat fine lines as well as rough skin, and so far I really like it. I use it after I wash my face, 2-3 times a week. And because it isn't a traditional retinol, there are no risks with sun-exposure, so it can be used during the day time.

I'm so happy to have partnered with a brand I genuinely love to create this post. They gave me the freedom to not just talk about their products, but to also share a way in which I'm trying to improve my own sustainability at home. Not many brands are open to having a real conversation, so I'm thankful to get to work alongside Biossance. I've been a fan for years, and have received so many messages from you guys trying out their products and falling in love too.

And since their Squalane + Mineral SPF 45is a newer product, I'm excited to be able to giveaway a few of them here! I have 3 SPFs to giveaway, so to enter, simply leave a comment below with your IG handle, and maybe share a way you reduce waste at home! I'm not perfect and still have plenty of room for improvement, so tips are always welcome!

TOP 10 AIRBNBS I'VE STAYED AT

When it comes to traveling, one of my favorite resources is Airbnb. I would say about half of the time that I plan a trip, we end up staying in an Airbnb, and it is always the first place we look for lodging. It's usually much less money than a hotel, more unique, and can offer a better background for our travels. And while the places we stay don't always end up on the gram, they are usually so charming and perfect for relaxation. So today I'm rounding up 10 of our favorite Airbnbs from all over the world!

First things first - if you're new to Airbnb, good news. If you click this link to sign up for an account, you'll get $40 in travel credit for free. And since plenty of the places on here are real bargains, it can make a real impact on your budget for travel! There's no code to enter, just click that link, create an account, and when you go to make your first booking, you'll have $40 in credit ready to go. Just remember, you have to be new to Airbnb!

ROME
Paradise Apartment //  Just this Summer, Eric and I visited Rome for the first time, and stayed for 3 nights. We initially had looked at hotels, but found they were all pretty pricey for something nice, and then still pretty expensive for something small. So we headed to Airbnb to look up places and found this apartment.

While small in size, it was SO cute, and looked just like the pictures when we arrived (maybe not as bright, but we kept the curtains shut). It was near all of the restaurants we wanted to visit, had AC (such a must have in the Summer), and had everything we needed. It was a good deal for the amount of time we were there, and we loved it!

PARIS
Vintage Apartment near Notre Dame //  We stayed at this apartment last fall in Paris, and while photos of it never made it on my Instagram, it was absolutely gorgeous. Because it was in the middle of fashion week, I ended up with clothing all over the apartment - so it wasn't photo ready, but it was a perfect haven while visiting. The decor was SO good, and it was above a great street with a good crepe shop below. It got a little loud at night (on the weekend) but the large windows, laundry, kitchen, and amazing decor were too good to pass up. Definitely recommend this one, especially for how much you can easily walk to.

PALM SPRINGS + JOSHUA TREE
Peach Residence // Okay, confession time, there's not actually 10 Airbnbs on this list, because the Peach Residence in Palm Springs is actually rented through it's own website. BUT it is one of the best places I've ever stayed at, and a lot of you had asked for the details on it, so here you go! It was SUCH a good deal, with 4 bedrooms, a huge backyard, and a lovely pool. We loved the space, and the best part was how private the backyard was - it looked out onto a completely natural area to the mountains with absolutely no other houses blocking your view for miles. It's great for groups and would be amazing for a bachelorette weekend!

Echo Ranch House //  We stay in the desert A LOT. It's just so close by, and is a quick road trip away from LA. We stayed at the Echo Ranch House last year, and it became the background for a number of IG photos you may have seen on my page. It was a lovely house, perfectly decorated, and with the most amazing 70s couch you've ever seen. It was right near the most amazing restaurant in the desert (La Copine) and just a short drive away from Pioneertown. Great for a couple, or even two couples!

JTree Cabin Co //  This is another property that you've seen on the 'gram, and also in a video we shot for Chloé's Nomade Fragrance! While I didn't capture much of the inside of the house, what made this place special was the outdoor tub. There were hoses to run warm water out to it, and the views of the empty desert at sunrise made for the perfect shot in the YouTube video we made, which you can see here. We found it to be a really private and quiet spot for our weekend trip, and I loved cooking breakfast and eating it outside!

NEW YORK
Stylish Peaceful Oasis // While I didn't capture any photos of this Apartment in NY, we stayed there during Fashion Week last September, so it was mostly just a place to sleep. However it was well decorated, had everything we needed, and was walking distance to some of the best spots in the Lower East Side. If you want to be immersed in New York, this apartment would be perfect!

PORTLAND
Garden Oasis Guest House //  One of the first Airbnbs we stayed at was a tiny house in the backyard of a larger house. We were on a budget, but still wanted somewhere cute, and this place was perfect! It's quite small,  but well done, and the backyard setting makes it feel so private and removed. And, this spot holds a special place in my heart because it was on this trip that Eric and I got engaged! We popped bottles in the little house, and started planning our life together here, so I highly recommend it for any couples on a budget.

Wes Anderson Inspired Apartment //  We go to Portland a lot. It's a quick flight, has great restaurants, and is just in general a very fun city. I've stayed in a hotel there once, and every other time it's been Airbnbs, mostly because the city is full of unique places to stay for a deal. When we visited the city last fall with some friends we chose this cute apartment. It had everything we needed, great decor, and plenty of games to play.

NEW ORLEANS
Vintage Charm house //  I shared a photo of this space on Instagram and got SO many requests for the listing because the inside of this house was PERFECT. The decor was great, it was super roomy, and so cozy. A couple of things to note - like many houses in NOLA, it's shotgun style. Which means you have to walk through bedrooms to get to the kitchen and bathroom. But, if you're close enough friends and can text each other or knock to pass through, its perfect! I stayed with 2 other ladies and we didn't have any problems with this method. It's not especially close to the attractions of New Orleans, but it's a great deal, and close to the public transportation you'll need to get into the French Quarter. Plus it has a clawfoot and the coolest vintage refrigerator I've ever seen.

SCOTLAND
Former Abbey at Loch Ness // Just last November, Eric and I did our first UK road trip, which had us traveling through the Cotswolds, and all the way up to Scotland. The furthest north we stayed was right next to the famous Loch Ness. We found this historic building (once an Abbey) to stay in. There are a number of apartments on the grounds, but we stayed in what was called the Scriptorium : "once the secret 'writing room' of the monastery - forms now the very special framework of a unique one-bedroom-apartment on 2 floors with plenty of original features."

While we were only in the apartment itself at night, we loved this spot. It was great for 1-2 nights, and the bedroom up on the second floor was so unique. Plus the grounds provided for excellent photo ops, and we were super close to Loch Ness for exploring.

This post isn't sponsored by Airbnb (I wish!) but if you sign up using my link, I get a small amount of credit for our next trip. Just an FYI!

AUTUMN SHOPPING PICKS

I'm not usually one to spend a lot of time online shopping. Well, not a ton of time, anyway. But if there is one time of year that I get especially excited about for new pieces, it's September. Right after Labor day, all of my favorite sites and brands put out their Autumn collections, and I spend a few hours with 15 tabs open on my browser, searching for treasures. And since I've already done the legwork, I figured I would share my finds with you. I'll be sharing more pieces as the month progresses, but here are some lovelies that caught my eye. Enjoy!

HOW I'M PACKING FOR 2 WEEKS IN 3 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

$
0
0
Over the next two weeks, Eric and I will be heading out of LA, spending the weekend in Boston, 5 days in Paris, and 6 days driving around various cities in Switzerland. And while I'm tempted to just pack up everything I own and just "figure it out" when I land, I know that that will lead to stress, overpacking, and having to lug multiple giant suitcases around. I think a lot of the time when I see photos of bloggers traveling (especially during Fashion week) there is a tendency to glorify how many suitcases have been brought along. It's become the norm to show a bogged-down airport cart, or else an overflowing car trunk, stuffed to the brim with suitcases.

Whether it's intentional or not, it always feels like the photo is trying to convey just how many things someone owns, or how many times a day they're planning on changing, and the overall fantasy attached to the world of fashion and fashion blogging. The idea that you simply must bring piles of clothing, tons of designer bags, and of course, a separate suitcase just for shoes.

And honestly - I don't want to shame anyone. I am not invited to a ton of shows every year, I get some invitations and tend to only attend a few shows. I hate the idea of changing outfits every few hours, so I don't. There are plenty of bloggers out there who are invited to all of the biggest shows, and have tons of gifted pieces that they need to bring along. But for me, it's just not how I travel, and I always wonder how it feels to readers when this is portrayed as the norm.

Don't get me wrong - I'm bringing clothing that I plan on shooting looks in. I have multiple purses I'm bringing, and I am excited to create content in each of the locations we are visiting. It's my job! But I do want to try to show a balance between the two worlds, and how I pack for multiple cities. I get really anxious about overpacking, so for the most part avoid checking luggage at all costs. But when it comes to seasonal travel, coats and boots take up more room, so I am resigned to my fate of checking some luggage.

So today I wanted to share tips based on some questions that were submitted via Instagram for this post, including answering questions like how I pack my suitcase for multiple destinations, how I maximize space, and how I choose versatile pieces.

"How do you pack less in order to mix and match on vacation?"
When it comes to avoiding the trappings of over-packing, my advice is to create outfits, and try them on. I'm serious. I used to be the type of person to throw various bottoms, tops, dresses, and shoes in a bag, and assume that I would be able to just mix and match on the go. And while that can work for a few days, at the end of the trip I'd always realized that there were not only a few pieces I'd wished I'd packed, but even more pieces that I never even touched.

So what I do, is put together a pile of clothing that I'm thinking about bringing, and start trying things on. I put shoes with looks, and style the whole thing, and when I've found a look I like, I take a mirror photo and save it in my phone. One look, done. I continue until I feel I have enough for the trip, but I always keep in mind that a different look does not mean a head-to-toe new outfit. If I swap out a blouse, and maybe put different shoes with a pair of jeans I'm already planning on bringing, that to me is a new look. During a 2 week trip, it's very unlikely that I would need more than 2 pairs of jeans, so I try to pick those pieces that can be worn more than once.

"Do you pack different looks for day vs night?"
This is another way that I like to cut down on what I'm bringing. For example, I almost always pack a sleeker look for nighttime, and that is usually in the form of a simple slip dress. My go to is the 1996 dress from Realisation Par. Paired with heels, it's a great look for going out at night. But, that same dress can easily be worn during the day, with a sweater thrown over it and walking shoes or boots. The dress turns into a skirt in a way, and it feels like a completely new look. Not only that, but silky dresses take up the least amount of room, so packing several is easily done without maxing out your space.

"What is the best way to pack coats?"
While it's not exactly fun, if you're planning on bringing more than one coat, opt for wearing one of your coats on the plane. It counts as a personal item, and if you're wearing it when you board, no one is going to bother you about it. I take mine off when I sit down, and usually gently roll it and either place it above in the bin (only if there's room! Leave space for others luggage) or by my feet. If the plane is chilly, I often drape my coat over my legs as a blanket.

This really only works if your coat isn't super bulky or structured, so pick wisely what coat you want to wear on the plane. A puffer coat for snow is going to be in every one's way, but an unlined wool option like Rouje's Philou Coat can be easily brought on board. As far as packing a coat in your suitcase, I like to put mine in last, laid on top of everything else, as flat and with as few folds as possible.

"Any tips on saving space in your suitcase?
I firmly believe in rolling my clothing to save space. I fold my clothing in thirds, and then roll them as tight as possible when packing. It allows me to really see everything in there, and takes up the least amount of room in my opinion. I also believe in an order to packing suitcases. I put all of my shoes in first, and stuff all of my underwear and socks in any boots I may have brought. That way, there's no unused space inside of my shoes. If I have sneakers, I put things I don't want to break inside of them (perfume or glass bottled skincare if I'm checking).

Once that layer is down I look for any gaps in between the layer of shoes. A small space can easily fit a rolled belt, or a hairbrush. Smaller items like tees and tanks can be rolled and sandwiched in between other things. I get this layer as level as possible, and then start putting my rolled clothing, starting with my bottoms. Denim and skirts go in, follower by sweaters and tops. Any purses that I pack usually have tees or socks inside of them to maximize space / hold their shape. And I use as many dustbags as possible! Shoes, purses, even outfits can be put into spare dustbags.  I finish up with my skincare that I am planning on checking (larger bottles and things I don't need on the plane) and seal up my luggage.

In my personal bag I keep my laptop, in-flight skincare essentials, snacks, headphones, passports, tickets, back up batteries, and maybe a book or my planner. I recently got this laptop bag from CREAGH and I am obsessed. Not only does it have a pocket for literally everything I need to bring, but it perches perfectly on a carry on suitcase, and fits up right under a seat on the plane. It's chic enough that when I am out and about, I will carry it as a purse, and when moving from airport to airport, I know where everything I need is located.

"What are some comfortable but cute looks you choose for lots of walking?"
In the summer, I always recommend a cotton sundress, and sneakers for walking around. Add a denim jacket or a lightweight blouse to keep your arms out of the sun, and you're good to go. For fall, my pick is great vintage jeans or comfortable high rise jeans like this pair from Madewell with a sweater and sneakers. Pick a purse you love, and it's a great choice for visiting lots of museums and riding public transportation.

If you'd like to avoid wearing sneakers the whole time, I recommend finding some comfortable loafers or mules to bring along. I almost always pack a pair of mules (it's what I wear on the plane since they come off easily in a security check) and loafers can work just as well with a dress as they do with jeans.

And that's basically how I do it! To be fair, I will be checking a larger suitcase (not photographed here), but beyond that I'm hoping to keep everything pretty compact. Any questions you'd still like answered? Leave them in the comments below!

Maybe it's because I spent my weekend on the east coast, but I'm declaring that Summer is officially dead, and we're living in an Autumnal world. And while I know it's still plenty warm in a lot of the world, there's still plenty of chilly mornings and evenings coming up, perfect for trotting out your suede boots and coats. I'm about to leave for Paris tonight, so click below to see some of my favorite pieces I'm either planning on styling or wanting to purchase for the coming months.

MY IN FLIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE

For long haul flights, I usually board the plane without a stitch of makeup on, and then spend the rest of the flight trying to keep my skin moist. It's a constant battle, and at the midway point of any flight, I can feel my face really drying out. So for my most recent flights, I started to bring along a few more products than just my usual face oil and lip balm - and I really noticed a difference. Scroll down to see my picks!

Biossance Face Wipe (not pictured) // These have been a staple in my skincare arsenal for a while. I hate most face wipes because of how drying they can be, but these ones are made with oil soaked into them, so it’s not a harsh way to remove dirt and makeup. Plus the squalene oil helps condition and treat your eyelashes + eyebrows as you’re using them, so it’s a major plus for me. On a sidenote, I carry these in my gym bag to use occasionally, and keep 2 or 3 in my bedside table drawer for those nights where I’m too tired to complete my usual 6 step skincare routine.

Sisley Paris Floral Toning Lotion // Because this comes in such a large container, I keep a travel squirt bottle in my toilet bag that I refill before traveling. When I’m at home I use this as a morning toner soaked into a reusable cotton pad, but during travel I use it as an additional wipe for pre or post face mask. It just helps my skin to feel clean and not dried out.

Joanna Vargas Dawn Face Mask // I am not the biggest fan of most sheet masks (they can be a bit clumsy to put on) but this one is ABSOLUTELY worth looking like a nut on the plane while wearing it. My skin felt brand new after taking it off, and the extra product that was in the bag was enough to apply to my neck too. Long flights can be dead boring, so it’s a great excuse to really spend some time on your skin. Plus it’s fun to scare fellow passengers with your sheet face.

Fresh Vitamin Nectar Antioxidant Glow Water // I love a good refreshing mist, and while my Caudalie spray is a huge favorite, I was afraid to travel with the glass and risk breaking it. Plus I think the bottle is too large for TSA anyway. I was sent this glow water from Fresh and have been using it throughout the trip, not just on the plane but as a makeup refresher mid day. During the 11 hour flight from Switzerland to LA, I spritzed this on my face several times. It has a pleasant smell that’s subtle enough to not bother other passengers.

Cle de peau eye cream // I’ve dealt with under eye circles my whole life, so eye cream is a non-negotiable for me. This one from Cle de Peau works beautifully and looks like a gem sitting on your in-flight tray table. I had a flight attendant ask about it too, so it must mean it’s working! Or she just liked the container.

Sisley Black Rose Precious Oil // Are you guys sick of hearing me talk about this oil or what? I use a Biossance Vitamin C oil during the day, and this is my nighttime oil (as I use retinol treatments at night that do not pair with vitamin C). It is SO luxurious, and it’s really hard for me to not go through a bottle in a month. But, a little goes a long way, and it always makes my skin feel soft after using. I can’t imagine traveling without it.

Fresh Tinted Lip Treatment in Spice // This is a product that a follower actually sent me the info on, prompting me to make a rare trip to Sephora just to get it. I love lip treatments, and even more so, I love a good warm lip color. Because of how fair I am, my lips can often appear super pale, giving me a tired or sick look. Not cute. So even though I skip makeup while traveling, this helps me avoid looking totally dead for when we land.

Sunday Riley Good Genes // While I did pack this to use on the flight, I ended up liking the afformentioned Joanna Vargas sheet mask so much, I decided to skip using it on the flight. But I did pack it, and I did use it the night I landed, and I doooo love it, so I figured I should include it. It’s a great treatment to travel with, and it has a pump that you can twist to prevent product spilling out, so it’s safe to pack.

A WEEKEND IN BOSTON

LA is just a bit landlocked when it comes to traveling to Europe, so the flights can be long. Over ten hours long. And while I usually just plan on spending a full travel day being uncomfortable / staying awake all night in a small seat, on this last trip, I decided to do things differently with a stopover flight. I was first introduced to the idea of a stopover last Summer when Eric and I visited Iceland for 2 nights on our way to Spain. It ended up costing about the same amount as having a layover flight - we just extended the amount of hours we spent in our layover city to turn it into an overnight stopover stay. So rather than jetting straight to Paris for fashion week and having to shoot photos with a serious case of jet lag upon landing, we elected to spend the weekend in Boston.

I’ve never been to Boston before - and for the most part my knowledge of the east coast is pretty limited to New York. So when we first started looking into the idea of a stopover, New York was my first idea. I’ve traveled there a lot, I know the city, and have my favorite spots to visit, so it felt like an easy solution. But once we started delving into the logistics of staying in New York for under 48 hours, the idea seemed like a bad one. The airport is far from the city. Cabs are expensive, the Subway takes a while, and once you’re in the city? Everything is expensive. I love NY hotels, but when it came to planning a visit around essentially being able to rest and relax and adjust to a time zone change, it started to become extravagant.

Shot these collegiate photos on Harvard campus!

Fortunately I follow a few bloggers who are based in Boston, so I had already saved a folder of Boston locations in the ‘Saved’ tab on Instagram. I had seen Gabbymbeki post photos of rad restaurants and chic cafes. I had seen Eva Emmaline post stylized outfits shot on the streets of Boston. So it was on my radar as a city to visit, and why not do that while on my way to Europe?

I looked into hotels in Boston to start the process, and found a lot of choices. There were a lot of airport-esque hotels and some big brand names, but I knew I wanted something comfortable, easy to get to from the airport, not over-the-top, and near good coffee. Eric has made me into a bit of a coffee snob (I’M SORRY I HATE ME TOO) so we plan a lot of our life while traveling around how we can get a good cup of coffee or an oat milk cappuccino. Everyone has their needs, ours are just very caffeine-centric. So when I found the Godfrey Hotel I knew I was in the right place.

Very much wanted to steal the headboard at the Godfrey.

They have a great coffee shop downstairs (they have Oatly, alert, they have Oatly), they’re near to a lot of major businesses and amenities, and getting to and from the airport would be a breeze. Check, check, and check. The rooms looked comfortable, and the whole vibe felt very us, so we pounced on booking a flight (LA to Boston, Boston to Paris) and then a room. Once we had those major pieces down, all we had to do was decide how to fill in our time while there.

Since our plan was to use the trip to adjust to a new timezone (hopefully to circumnavigate the 8 hour time difference between LA and Paris), we elected to keep our plans pretty lowkey. We went to a few restaurants (listed below) and spent a lot of downtime relaxing at the hotel. It wasn’t our usual go-go-go get the pictures weekend trip, but we still found plenty of locations to shoot content to ease our shooting schedule in Paris. And we had a great chance to see some historic US locations, so it was really the idea weekend away, without the dreariness of having to turn right back home at the end of it.

So below are the places we visited and the spots I would recommend, along with a few of my tips and stories along with it!

Shot these images on the streets of Boston - so many good photo spots to be had.

To Stay:
Godfrey Hotel // I stay in a lot of hotels as a part of my travel-blogging, so I have a lot of things I look for when it comes to a stay. I want comfort, quiet, and nothing too fussy. A good lobby bar, an attached restuarant, and a great view areal helpful too! We loved our stay, and were really happy with how centrally located we were.

Coffee:
George Howell Coffee // As mentioned above, this coffee shop was actually in the bottom of our hotel, so it was insanely convenient. Add to that their excellent selection of coffee and tea (and the OATLY!), and you have a great spot to recharge. We went a few times a day and had one last tea before our late flight to Paris, and it was great each time.

 At Juliet.
 These ladies are so rad.

Restaurants:
Juliet // I had this spot recommended from a number of people, and actually got to go with some local Bostonians, Gabby and Bethany (of @gabbymbeki and @twentysomethingplus). The food was great, the conversation was better, and I all around would recommend it for a charming brunch. I got the Parisienne and struggled a bit with the egg cup, but it did make for a pretty picture and a great breakfast once I got the hang of it.

Row 34 // We visited this restaurant for (you guessed it) oysters. Our flight got in at about 8pm, so we made late reservations for 10pm. It’s a really popular spot, so reservations seem like a must-have, but maybe if you are open to a late dinner you could pop in. We loved everything we had, and the wine was great too.

North Square Oysters was my favorite spot from the trip.

North Square Oysters // We visited this Oyster shop while at the end of our journey on the freedom trail. It wasn’t on our list of spots, but as it was our last night in Boston, I was really wanting to have juuuust a few more oysters. Not only was the food great, but the interior was absolutely gorgeous. Show up when they open and you can grab this little table we sat at by the window.

Sweetgreen // I know, I know, this is not a local little-known-place, but a total chain salad and bowl shop that’s available in a lot of major cities. But, in the middle of all of the oysters and drinks and walking, it felt really nice to sit down and have some greens. Not sure if this is even worth putting on the list, but to me it’s helpful to know Boston has a bunch of locations, so if you’re in need of some health, make a stop in.

To Visit:
The Freedom Trail // while technically not one place, The Freedom Trail is a must-visit if you find yourself in Boston and with some time for walking. It comprises of over a dozen stops including cemeteries, churches, and other points of historical interest.

 Inside Queen of Swords.

Queen of Swords // Loved this little shop, and if I'd had more room in my suitcase I probably would have splurged. Next time!

Bow Market // This was a great little outdoor mall featuring tons of independently owned shops that Gabby took us to! Plenty of vintage, handmade pieces, and a little plant shop too.

Harvard // “You got into Harvard??” “What, like it’s hard?” Okay, there are more reasons to visit Harvard then just to recreate scenes from Legally Blonde (although, 10/10 highly recommend doing this), not least of which because it’s a beautiful campus. We went by on the weekend and walked around the grounds, and even snapped some ‘collegiate-y’ photos of a Ralph Lauren look. It just felt all too appropriate of a setting, and all in all was a really peaceful place to walk around.

And that's all I had time to do during our short stay! I wish it had been longer, but I feel fairly certain we will be back again soon. Until next time, Boston!

CROC-EMBOSSED LEATHER

Sure, at this point, everyone has seen animal prints make a comeback. From leopard print skirts of all shapes to faux-snakeskin shirts at Zara, it's clearly a big trend right now. And while it seems like anything animal print could look dated or tacky, right now it all feels very fresh and elevated. Not to be that person, but I think I may just have to add one more animal print into your life - this time in the form of Croc-embossed leather. It's perfect for adding a touch of texture to your fall looks, and while I love a leo-print,  I think a subtle croc-leather will be a more timeless trend in the long run.

I couldn't do a blog post about my current favorites without featuring my forever-favorite French label, Sezane. Is there anything they can't do? The answer is no. So when I was first starting to see Croc-embossed leather pop up as a trend, I knew Sezane would not only do some styles, but also do them well. I wasn't disappointed when I visited their newly relaunched site to see that they in fact have a TON of choices. My additions have been the Lisa Loafers, a new wallet, and the sweetest little coin purse that I've actually been using to keep bandaids in while traveling, as my feet tend to need them after lots of walking. Not exactly sexy, but it does make for a cuter way to carry them around.

While I am fully addicted to brown tones of all kinds, sometimes you just need a great black purse to wear with all of those great black shoes and boots you have in your closet, you know what I mean? Enter this purse from the effortlessly cool label, Anine Bing. I love the exterior pocket and unexpected shape for adding a little edge to my outfits.

I was lucky enough to get to see the latest collection by my favorite shoe brand, By Far, in person in Paris last month. And even luckier to get to grab one of their new purses that they have just started making. By Far actually makes my most reached for Croc-embossed mules (I wear them about 3 times a week and have two pairs of the same style just in case something happens to one - I'd offer a link but they're an older style!).

So when I saw they were getting into the world of producing purses, I crossed my fingers for a croc-leather style, and was pleasantly surprised to find out they made several styles. I picked up the Mini purse in a chocolate shade, but it also comes in a lovely tan shade too. In fact, they've made so many good croc-effect purses, I've included my favorites rounded up below.

AndOtherStories Knit / Vintage denim

And last (but not least) comes my beloved YSL Purse. I added this bag to my collection at the beginning of the year, and I think it's safe to say, this piece is what started my love for Croc-embossed leather. I fell for the texture right away, and once I had it in my hands, I realized the best part about the leather style is how much more durable it is. I love a good standard leather purse, but they are SO prone to scratches and signs of wear. Croc-embossed leather is treated and thicker, and the patterns hides any and all scratches. Win win! While this particular style is sold out, there is a similar version in dark brown that I adore and am currently telling myself that I do NOT need.

KEEP IT COZY

While the weather certainly isn't chilly juuuust yet in LA, with temperatures still well into the 80s just this week, I'm already ahead of the curve and preparing for snuggle worthy weather. I love any and all things that feel cozy, so today I'm sharing some of my favorite pieces and brands for those days and evenings spent indoors and bundled up. So grab a knit blanket, some super soft socks, put your hair up, and scroll down for my picks.

When it comes to being cozy, I think the first thing I picture is come clothing, and my hair pulled up in a scrunchie, and no one does scrunchies like Donni. You guys have definitely heard me talk about Donni before. I'm a fan of any brand that takes something seemingly basic and elevates it to a talking-piece; which is exactly what Donni has done with the once humble scrunchie. Made in silk and thermal materials, they have the best color choices, and the scrunchies feel so comfortable in your hair. Not only that, they look chic when they're on your wrist (as a scrunchie does tend to spend half its life not actually in ones hair). While they are on the pricier side, I do think the quality makes them worth it, and they make a great gift too.

I actually discovered this French sock brand via my loves over at Dôen. They've styled the socks in some of their shoots and recommended them as high end, stylish socks. They come in a LOT of size choices, like all the way from children's sizes up to adult sizes. And, they have sizes specific to your foot so you're ensured they'll be a good fit. They are on the pricier side, but they packaging, design, and care that goes into each pair is apparent when you receive them. I'm planning on styling these with heels for a whole socks+sandals look, but I've also been wearing them with my boots, and they just feel so special for this time of year.

I'm such a fan of cute coffee mugs - especially if they are unique and handmade. I found Allison Fretheim ceramic mugs on Etsy earlier this year, and was an instant fan. I just love not only how cute the designs are, but that they are entirely handmade with care. It just makes my morning coffee feel that much more special. PS: Because I love them so much, I'm going to be giving one mug away (of your choice!). To enter, follow @allisonfretheimceramics on Instagram and leave a comment below with you IG handle!

Where did I find rad brands before Instagram existed? Otherland is a great shop that produces luxury candles in chic containers. I love candles year round, but something about being able to light one when the sun is setting and the temperatures are dropping just feels so especially cozy. I love how even these burn and the scents are fantastic. My current favorite is Rattan for a woodsy autumnal vibe. And just in case you're looking for holiday gifts early, I think the 3 pack set of these candles (with a matching matchbook!) would be an especially chic gift.

Finally, if there is anyone who understands coziness, it surely is the Scots. Afterall, Scotland definitely experiences real winter, whereas LA gets what I like to call a "kiss of winter weather". Rosie Sugden is a cashmere company based out of Scotland, and their knit accessories are coziness on another level. I fell for their socks, and cannot wait for a chance to style this hat and wrist warmers soon. I'm tempted to plan a trip to London in December, so if I do, these are sure to come along with me.

SWITZERLAND PHOTO DIARY

It's finally here! Our entire Switzerland trip, shared with you in my favorite way - the Photo Diary. Rather than a ton of text and a day by day breakdown, I'd like to let the photos from our trip speak for themselves. I'll include a few of our favorite spots and details along the way, but words can hardly do a gorgeous country like Switzerland justice.

Our trip kicked off in the most exciting way - a flight with SWISS International Air Lines. It was our first time getting to fly with them, and our first time in Business Class on an international flight. To be honest, most flights I take are very uncomfortable, so I really never document this part of the trip, but this time? It was a highlight of our travels. We boarded our plane and were greeted not only by the kind staff, but also by the chicest airplane cabin I have ever seen in my life. The wood grain detail, the little pods, and the seats that fold down into a bed. I know it seems like I'm using a lot of italics, but let me just say words can hardly describe how great of an experience we had.

The food was legitimately delicious, the staff was so attentive, and the 11 hour flight from Switzerland to LA on our way home was the comfiest I have ever been. I'll be sharing more in my stories, but this is easily my new favorite airline, and one that I hope to get to fly in the future. Even my husband who is 6' and absolutely dreads flying enjoyed the flight from start to finish. And rather than landing somewhere new and feeling exhausted, uncomfortable and irritable, we felt refreshed and relaxed upon landing. I know it sounds like I'm waxing poetic about an airline, but that's because I think I may be in love with SWISS International Air Lines. I'll share a bit more on my vlog, but major heart eyes over here.

Our first stop once we landed was the lovely, idyllic city of Basel. We picked up our Hertz car from the airport in Zurich, and drove about an hour west to Basel. Not only was the drive gorgeous (think rolling green hills, dotted with livestock) but we got to see so many little places in between that we mentally bookmarked to visit when we made the drive back to Zurich later in the week. Switzerland may be a small country, but honestly, once you're there, you realize how different each of the towns and cities are from each other.

Which brings me to Basel. We arrived to our hotel, checked in, and grabbed the camera to head out and explore. Thanks to our comfortable flight (see, I can't stop talking about it) we felt rested enough to just get going and try to see it all. The first thing that we realized when we got to Basel is how walkable everything is. Within a few short minutes, we found ourselves in the city center, and surrounded by great places that had been suggested to us. Our first stop was the Kunstmuseum, the oldest public museum in the world. It was such a lovely and open space, and it was so nice to get to wander around and take in all of the exhibits there. My personal favorites were the pieces below!

I have to say, I think Kunstmuseum was one of my favorite stops on this trip, I think just owing to the size and the peacefulness of the museum itself. There were so many artists to see, and it just felt like a great breath of calm after our rushed time in Paris. Switzerland moves at a more peaceful pace, and I found myself so much more relaxed while we were there.

As I said in my intro, rather than break down our trip day by day, I'd rather give you all the highlights to you can plan a trip there yourself. So here are my recommendations for Basel!

Basel
To Visit / See:
Old Town // You'll know you're in Old Town once the streets all become cobblestone. We walked around this area on our first afternoon and saw so many little charming streets and corners. If you're hoping to take some scenic photos, this would be my first recommendation of an area to visit. And it's just lovely to have a stroll through!
Spalenburg // This is the oldest winding street in the city, and filled with the cutest little shops. There were some great spots to pop in that I recognized (for instance, Aesop) but also some great local shops too. Our favorite part was just getting to walk up it and snap a few photos. It felt a little like Hogsmeade!
Rathaus // This reddish building in the middle of Old Town is their historic town hall. Great for pictures, and also just great to wander around.
The Rhine //  The Rhine river passes right through the middle of Basel, so it's makes for a beautiful sight to either walk along or over on Mittlere Brücke (old bridge).
The Ferry // And speaking of the river, one of the coolest things we saw was the ferry boat in the river. It's very historic looking, and interestingly enough, has no motor. You get on board and sit down, and the current carries the boat from shore to shore on a cable suspended above. We rode it quite a few times and it was just so surreal to get to do. You'll see more of it in the vlog, but it was pretty fun.
Basel Münster // This famous cathedral is sort of like the calling card of Basel. The two tall towers that you see in the background of my photo along the river is this very historic cathedral. While we didn't go inside, we did walk around the outside, and we did watch the sun set behind it on our last night. It's just a really lovely sight to see.
Kleinbasel // Another great area to walk around, on the opposite side of the river as Old Town. It means Little Basel, and this was the area we found the best little bars and restaurants in. Great little streets for walking down, fountains, the works!

To Eat / Drink:
Nomad Design & Lifestyle Hotel // We had a lovely dinner here on our first night, and while it wasn't traditional Swiss food, it was really delicious. I recommend the ramen!
Frühling // One of the first things we do when we visit any city is try to narrow down the best coffee shops. Eric found this spot on the first morning, and we went back 3 (!!) times. The coffee was fab, the cappuccinos were great, and I could have lived off of their almond croissants.
Gilgen Bakery // This very famous little bakery was SO much fun to visit! They had all of these unique pastries and sweets, as well as the cutest wee pretzel roll sandwiches! It felt very Swiss in there, and we adored it.
Walliser Kanne // One word for you - FONDUE. If you love any and all things cheesy, you have to HAVE to have fondue while in Switzerland. This place was recommended to us and we loved it! It looked a bit like the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland on the inside, which I realize is a very American thing to say, but you get what I mean.
Grenzwert Bar // Eric and I took design notes from this bar / cigar place. The inside had the most amazing vintage furniture, wallpaper, and even taxidermy. The drinks were great, and we found ourselves wondering if we could duplicate some of the design in our future home.
Klara // A bit like a food court, except way better. This place was home to a Thai restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a bar, a coffee shop, and about 5 other places. A great spot to get to try multiple dishes in a modern setting.

After a few days in Basel, we got to get into our Hertz car and start exploring. I've said it before on the blog, but I am a firm believer in renting a car when visiting a new place. It's the best way to get to really get out there and explore, to find places that aren't on your itinerary, and to have more of an adventure. With our car, we were easily able to pull off the freeway and visit some tiny towns that I don't even know the name of! We got to drive out into more of the farm country and visit the local cows (all of which had a bell around their neck!) and with our Hertz Connect device, we had internet and map access the whole time; even when we were out of the car. I really don't know how we would have done it without the device, since you can't guarantee that everywhere you visit will have wifi. We were just confident in always being connected, and it made posting and blogging on the go so easy.

After our drive from Basel and through the countryside, we arrived in the busy and chic city of Zurich! I've been dying to visit for a long time, and had plenty of recommendations on where to go. We checked into Hotel Helvetia which had the cutest decor and a great restaurant below, and got to exploring right away.

Zurich
To Visit / See:
Old Botanical Garden // We wandered into this botanical garden after breakfast one morning and I loved the little trails. The greenhouse was also especially pretty to see.
Viadukt // Once an actual aqueduct system, this is now home to a collection of shops and restaurants, set underneath the old arches that supported the water flowing above. Honestly I saw so many cute little shops selling handmade sweaters and chic brands. Wish I had had more time to shop!
Industrial Quarter // This is definitely an up and coming neighborhood in Zurich and reminded me a lot of DTLA's art district. Lots of great restaurants and just cool streets to see.
Lake Zurich // This was such a picturesque lake to see! Everyone was sat on benches along the shore, either feeding the swans that were there or else having a nice lunch and looking out at the view. We walked along it for a little while, and very nearly took a boat out. Next time!
Zurich Opera House // Because we happened to be visiting during the Zurich Film Festival, the area outside of the Opera House was quite busy. I loved the old building, and the inside is absolutely stunning!

Eat / Drink:
Coffee // This simply named coffee shop was so darling inside. The green marble counter and pink walls were a photographers dream, and the coffee was great.
Blaue Ente // We went to this restaurant on our first night, and it was fab! Full of seasonal dishes and set in a former paper mill, we both had pasta dishes that were SO good we didn't have room for dessert - which was a shame as the dessert menu looked amazing.
Italian Monkey // This was the restaurant we visited on our last night of the trip, and it was very romantic. We had pasta (again, I know!) and it was just as great as the dishes we had out first night. Zurich is definitely a foodie town, so make sure to try as many spots as you can.
Babu Bakery // This is a very famous bakery in town, and was such a cute setting inside. Eric had an amazing Acai bowl, and I opted for one of the best waffles I've ever had.
Chez Bistrot Marion // Even though we had just been in Paris, I couldn't resist visiting this Parisian cafe in Zurich. The decor, the food, the drinks - it was like an instagrammer's heaven. We took a ton of photos and I stuffed myself full of bread and crepes.
Restaurant Hiltl // While we didn't get the chance to eat here on this trip, Hiltl is one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in the world - they've been serving veggie-friendly dishes since 1898!

This trip was honestly such a dream come true. I've been wanting to visit Switzerland for a very long time, and getting to go there with Hertz was the best decision. Having a car and being able to take the road less traveled, to see things we hadn't planned on, and to make memories together was the best gift we could ask for. If you're planning a trip anytime soon, I highly recommend adding both Zurich and Basel to the top of your list.

Thank you to MySwitzerland, Hertz, SWISS, Basel, and Zurich for sponsoring this trip for us.

MY BIOSSANCE FAVORITES

One of the subjects I can talk about for a long longgg time (especially to strangers when standing in line at the grocery store) is skincare. There's just something about it that is so exciting to me, I think because I struggled with my skin for a long time. Whenever I've found a product or line that works for me, I tend to feel the need to tell everyone about it. A brand you've all heard me talk about for the last few years is Biossance. I've partnered with them over the past few months, and while I've mentioned various products, today I wan't to hone in on my absolute favorites. The products that I've gone through a bottle or a jar of and scrambled to re-order.

My introduction to Biossance was almost two years ago, when I was first sent their Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil and the Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. In the time since, I can safely say I have squeezed every last drop out of 4 bottles of the Rose Oil, and probably gone through 2 large bottles of the cleansing oil. I love these two products, and when I'm traveling, these are the non-negotiable, must pack items for me.

When I first tried the cleansing oil, I was perplexed. Prior to my introduction to Biossance, I had been using a soy-based cleanser or else a foaming wash. This was unlike anything I had tried, and it was a strange concept to me at first. An oil? To wash your face? I was skeptical about it, and tried it on my skin one night after a long shoot. The verdict? Instant love.

It's meant to go onto your skin, without any water, and immediately it starts to melt the makeup off. You then add water and while it doesn't foam up, it feels like a luxurious wash. When I pat my face dry after using the Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil, the first thing I always notice is that my skin feels softer. Even if I've had makeup on, allll day, my skin feels baby smooth. It's that plant-derived Squalane, and it offers a clean face without stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Plus, the size of the bottle means you can use a generous amount without running out frequently.

My next favorite product is the skincare essential I have successfully emptied the bottle of at least 4 times that I can think of. As a blogger, I'm often sent skincare products, but that doesn't mean I fall in love with everything I try. It also means that while there are plenty of products I'll try, I'll either not finish the bottle, or if I do, I won't necessarily restock it in my medicine cabinet. Not the case with the Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. It has been a product that once I tried, I have never let myself run out of. And thank goodness it's in stock at Sephora, because I ran out on a trip once and panicked until I drove myself over to the mall.

It's hard to describe, but my skin just drinks this oil up. I use it every single morning and the vitamin C just perks my skin up. I find that if I am wearing makeup that day, it applies more evenly, and if I'm not, I have a glow that doesn't require concealer. My skin has its ups and downs (like everyone) but this is an oil I absolutely swear by. And to be honest, a little goes a long way. Just a few drops is enough to pat into my skin, but there have been mornings where I've used a whole dropper, just to combat either a long night or some dry skin. I adore this oil.

My next two favorites are newer to my routine, but I like to think of them as being an essential pairing - the Squalane + Glycolic Renewal Facial Mask and the Squalane + Omega Repair Cream. I love a good face mask, and I especially love one that delivers instant results. This one is meant to be on your skin for 5-10 minutes (although in truth, I've left it on for close to 30 when distracted by a good Netflix binge), and it leaves my skin baby smooth. It's part mask, part exfoliator, and goes on in a non-distracting formula. You know those masks where you can't answer the door because you look crazy or like a murderer? This one is subtle, and for me just blends into my skin. Once it's time to rinse it off, your skin gets a great exfoliation, and it instantly brightens my complexion. The ultimate testament? Eric likes + uses this one too.

Because it's a mask that delivers serious results, I like to really baby my skin after. For the most part, I tend not to use creams and usually stick to oils for replacing moisture. But I feel like the Squalane + Omega Repair Cream is the face mask's best friend. They work beautifully when used together, so I like to follow my once-to-twice weekly Biossance mask night with the Omega cream. It's like an at home facial in my opinion, and these two products combined together have really saved my skin from days where it feels like it's getting dull.

So there you have it! The four Biossance products I can't get enough of, and the ones I will be replacing when they run out. Thank you so much to Biossance for continuing to partner with me - I'm your forever fan girl over here.

HOLIDAY PRESENTS FOR MOM AND DAD

I love choosing gifts for my friends and family. But, if I'm being honest, there are some people in my life who are easier to shop for than others. My closest friends, my husband, and my sister are always very easy to choose for. But picking gifts for my parents? That's usually where I need a little help. So this year, I am thrilled to partner with Ralph Lauren and their luxurious gift guide to find exactly what will make my parents happiest this holiday season.

For Mom
Alright, shopping for my parents is tricky, sure, but when it comes to shopping for my mom, I really felt the need to hit it out of the ballpark this year. My mom is someone I email / text / call almost daily, so she's a huge part of my life, and is someone I really wanted to treat. Something impersonal like a giftcard or a bottle of wine just didn't feel right. I wanted to find some gifts that felt personal, luxurious, and most importantly, felt like her.

  • Equestrian Scarf // When I saw this piece on RL's site, I knew I had a sure winner. My mom has been in love with horses and all things equestrian ever since she was a little girl. It's a love that she passed down to me, so this scarf was a natural pick. The size is fantastic and I know she will be able to style it a number of ways.
  • Knit Hat // My parents have a cabin in the mountains, but since they are from Orange County, they don't always have the warmest accessories for when they stay there. This hat is so gorgeously made, and the color will be perfect with my mom's wardrobe.
  • Knit Gloves // And while we're on the subject of keeping ones head warm, you may as well warm up those hands too. Cashmere, impossibly soft, and oh-so-chic. I know my mom will love these gloves all winter long.
  • Cashmere Sweater // My mom is absolutely classic when it comes to her style, and this sweater felt like a perfect fit. I love the idea of gifting cozy pieces for the holidays, and this sweater is equal parts warm and chic. I think I may just win the unspoken 'who can give the best gift' contest my sister and I have with this piece.

For Dad

Moms may be hard to shop for, but dads can be even harder. When I first clicked on the gift guide, I wasn't sure if I would be able to find exactly the right pieces for my dad. He has very specific interests and taste, so it can always be a bit tricky to shop for him. Fortunately I found a lot of good picks for him (and a few things I want to get for Eric too).

  • Bottle Coaster // My dad is working on completing his bar cart up at his cabin in the mountains. Right now it's a bit sparse, and really needs some decor to complete it. This bottle coaster with the Polo Club logo is such an instant classic. I feel certain that he will insist upon using this as soon as he opens it on Christmas Day. Likely to put a bottle of Port on.
  • Polo Shirt // Always a classic and always in style. The RL Polo shirt makes for such a great gift because it just looks so lovely folded neatly in a gift box. I went with a classic white color that I know he'll love.
  • Shoes // When I saw these shoes I knew I'd found a winner. My dad had a pair similar to these when I was a kid, and aside from the nostalgia, the detail on them is just so lovely. Eric may or may not (he is) be getting the same pair for Christmas.

Ralph Lauren makes the most classic pieces that appeal to not only me (I spent a lot of time on the site shopping for myself, I'll admit it) but also to my parents. I think everything I chose will have a place in their wardrobes and home for a long time, and everything just feels so luxurious to gift. If you're getting ready to shop for your parents (or really anyone in your life) be sure to check out Ralph Lauren's gift guides to nail down your perfect presents.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

When it comes to dressing for the holidays, I really like to look at the details. Sure, you could just throw on a sparkly dress, sky high heels, and a bold red lip, but I tend to gravitate towards something a bit more understated. A perfectly cozy sweater, tailored pants, and maybe an pop of detail with a festive hair clip or clutch. It's a more understated way to dress for special occasions, and I find that the pieces mix so much better into my wardrobe this way. I can reach for these styles again and again, holiday party or not. And even better? They make for great gifts. Which is why I am so happy to have partnered with Ann Taylor to share some of my favorite picks with you today.

Cozy Knits // I absolutely love sweaters (I know, shocker) so while I really was drawn to this camel knit featured in my outfit, I also really like the idea of something a bit more bold as a gift. This Striped sweater in red tones is so cute, and I know will make for a great gift for a friend of mine.

Tailored Pants // I actually saw these pants on the mannequin at Ann Taylor while I was shopping and was immediately in love. The lace detailing on the bottom? So chic, and really adds a nice touch to a simple look.

Festive Hair Accessories // I love love love that hair clips are having a big moment again, and Ann Taylor has some really cute choices. The velvet hair bows featured below are my favorites.

Velvet please // Speaking of velvet, how about a simple but elegant velvet clutch? I love to reach for velvet this time of year, and in clutch-form it will make for a great gift to give (or maybe just to keep). Bonus points for an oversize bow detail!

SWEATER WEATHER

Cozy knits will always be a staple of my wardrobe - despite living in a state that rarely requires that I wear one. There's just something about the perfect sweater that can make you feel like your look is not only completely comfortable, but styled and put-together. So today I'm sharing a few of my favorite sweaters + a list of my favorite places to shop for them.

SEZANE // What, you thought I'd post about my favorite sweaters and somehow not mention the French e-shop that I am completely obsessed with? Sezane has been killing the style game for a while now, but I get most excited when they start putting out their knitwear. Everything fits a bit tailored, and the colors are always so chic and sophisticated looking. I like that they have both thinner knits (to avoid looking bulky) and some chunkier oversize pieces for when the holiday dishes start coming out in full force. This pink number is pretty darling, but I think the one I will be wearing most this season is this color-blocked knit I spotted on Bethany of TwentySomethingPlus.

KRISTINIT // I love a good local brand, and this LA based label couldn't be more local in my books. I love Kristinit for dresses and dressier pieces, but their latest knitwear launch is also pretty fab too. This Burgundy + Red turtleneck is a great oversize piece, and has - get this- hidden pockets. WIN WIN.

DOEN // Sure, we all know Doen for their ethereal dresses and gauzy tops, but they are also absolute geniuses when it comes to knitwear too. I ordered this cardigan on presale when it was still boiling hot in August, and while it was a bit of a gamble (and a splurge) I have worn it a TON since it arrived. They are on the pricier side, but the quality and craftsmanship you get with their pieces is apparent from the moment your order arrives. Plus, who doesn't love shopping small?
MANGO // To be honest, I don't shop Mango's selection very often, as it's not a store that is available anywhere near me. But while I was in New York last week by myself, I had some time to kill before a meeting and popped into the Mango shop in Soho. This knit was calling my name (and on sale too!) so I had to indulge. I will definitely be packing this one for London next week, so get ready to see a whole lot more of it.

REBECCA TAYLOR // Okay, this sweater has all of my favorite colors, puff sleeves, and is perfectly cozy. What more is there to say other than I will be styling it with this chic little CREAGH bag and feeling very wintery-chic, thank you very much.

11 HOUR TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

While the last time I spoke on my blog about flying, I was sharing my experience in the extreme comfort of an International Business Class flight (my first and hopefully not my last fancy flight), today I'm here to share the reality of what most international flights look like for me. Eric and I always fly economy, and while it's not exactly a comfortable experience when you're stuck in a seat for 11 hours, we have learned a few tips + tricks when it comes to what to bring on board with you. Click through to see my recommendations for what will get you through without feeling like an absolute wreck when you land.

COZY COMFORT // I never thought I would become that person who brings their own blanket on board, but here we are. Our flight this very day is a redeye, that puts us into London at 10:30am tomorrow. So if you're like me and cannot sleep without a blanket, bringing one from home is pretty great. This one by Ketzal is thin and small, and can be worn as a scarf (albeit a large scarf) while boarding. It's a bit of a splurge given that it is cashmere, but oh my word, it has really lended me some in flight comfort as of late. Pair it with some cashmere socks if you're feeling extra fancy, and you're good to go.

IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT // I think it goes without saying that you WILL be bored in flight at some point. My solution is, constant podcasts and books on tape. I usually will download a new audiobook before flying, but I also will purposely not catch up on my favorite podcasts so that I can have a lot of new content to listen to. My favorite in-flight podcasts are usually Last Podcast on the Left, My Favorite Murder, The Dollop, and Casefile. Which is to say - I like true crime, comedy, and some history. I can't live without my bluetooth headphones (and they're on major sale on Amazon), and pretty much turn them on as soon as I get to the airport. I tend to get a little anxious around travel, so having a little voice to listen to in my head helps. I feel a bit like I'm in my own world, and it always soothes me.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE // This probably won't come as a surprise, but as someone who prides themselves on efficient packing (I hate the trope of a blogger with 8 suitcases), I love having a carryon that has everything in its place. This backpack from This is Ground is our latest travel companion, and we are obsessed. While it won't be what I carry, Eric will be in charge of this sleek backpack that not only looks great, but has a pouch for EVERYTHING. Our laptop, multiple cameras, back up batteries, passports, even snacks. There are organization cubes for everything, and zippers and compartments that are as efficient as they are chic. I'm hooked.

BEAUTY ESSENTIALS // Flying is a dirty, moisture-sucking experience that can leave you feeling especially gross by the time you land. Since we have limited time on this trip, there won't be a lot of downtime when we land to freshen up, take a shower, and restart the day. We pretty much will need to start shooting and exploring once we land, so I don't have time for dull skin. My current favorites for in-flight are a moisturizing sheet mask (pick any from Joanna Vargas), the Fresh Vitamin C mist, and these acid treatment pads from Dr. Dennis Gross. They're super easy to pack, and after washing your face, you can give yourself a bit of a spa treatment before you (hopefully) doze off. Another key thing to pack? Your own mirror. I picked up this lighted one from Simple Human and it's a lifesaver. Who wants to try to do their skincare in that teeny airplane bathroom anyway?

A RARE TREAT // Last but not least, is exactly what I would recommend if you're traveling with a small child, but it works equally well for adults - pack yourself a treat. Flying is a draaaag. It's exciting to go somewhere new, but it can be a bit maddening if you're like me and tend to spend the whole time awake. So, my advice is to always pack yourself a small treat. Whether that is in the form of a new magazine or book, a homemade sandwich, or even one of those fun in-flight cocktail kits - pick something that you can look forward to at hour 8 when you're pretty much over the whole experience.

IN MY SHOPPING BAG // JANUARY

For some reason, the whole idea of shopping for clothing in December feels weird to me. Maybe it's because I'm so focused on getting gifts and cooking and baking for the holidays, but I always find that I spend less time online shopping around the holidays. Right after, though? That's when I get the spending itch. Here are seven pieces that I'm currently loving, and some of which I've purchased. I still haven't pulled the trigger on buying that Chloé purse - mostly because I cannot decide between the croc-embossed style or the brown one pictured above. But also mostlyyyy because it's a splurge and a half.

HAIR ACCESSORIES I'M LOVING

I think it's no secret that hair clips and accessories are having a bit of a revival at the moment. Gone are the days of the thin black elastic meant to just hold your hair up and disappear. Gone are the bobby pins that are never meant to be seen. Lately, it's felt a lot more like the 90s when it comes to statement scrunchies and visible clips adorning your hair. And honestly? I'm here for it.

While hair clips and accessories are absolutely having a moment, I'm not saying I want to go right back to Y2K and slick my hair back in a headband or else cover my head in a crown of neon butterfly clips (which yes, I totally did both a lot). I like that the latest hair clips and slides are available in more muted tones, and the scrunchies that are out there are made in lux materials and modern tones.

And speaking of scrunchies, while you all have heard me profess my love for Donni scrunchies in the past (this mustard yellow silk one is a personal fav), there's a new scrunchie I've been reaching for lately, but just at night. Lunya recently came out with a 'sleep scrunchie' and I am here for it. It skips the whole idea of having to wrap it around multiple times, and by pulling on two tabs, keeps your hair out of your face at night, preserves any curls you may have put in, and doesn't leave a dent in your hair when you wake.

As someone who washes my hair every 4 days, I spend most days with the same hair style I went to sleep with. I curl my hair once after I've washed it, and then just let it do it's thing for the next few days. This Lunya scrunchie does a good job of helping preserve my waves, as well as combat the cowlick that I have in the back that my pillow tends to bring out. I'm a fan.

Another scrunchie I'm loving is this bow one that I spotted on Noelle Downing. Now that my hair is at the length where I can start to wear top knots, I'm all about dressing it up. A cute little bow on top? Done. It comes in a lot of colors and prints, but I think it will surprise no one that I went for this mustard and dot combo.

Easily the hair accessory I reach for the most though, are these slide clips from Free People. I have them in two colors (beige tortoise and gold tortoise) and I am OBSESSED. I packed one set along for our trip to London in December, and I think wore them in every single photo. There's not an outfit I have that they don't work with, and I love that they can dress up any look. Lately I've been mixing the two colors together (on one side of my head) and I love how they look with my hair color. Be sure to check out the other colors offered (that green shade is so chic) just in case you're more open to embracing color than I am.

THE FEELING I REFUSE TO LOSE

Last week, in between meetings and errands, I happened to pop into one of my favorite secondhand shops in LA - Wasteland. And while they are far from a thrift store (they carry gently used and new designer, current, and vintage clothing), shops that carry secondhand clothing give me a bigger thrill than any other kind of retail therapy. The possibility of what may be in the racks or on the shelves is just so irresistible to me - probably because I have been shopping stores like this my entire life.

If you've read my last blog post, you'll know that I was toying with the idea of purchasing this Chloé purse. I first saw it months ago, and have been thinking about in ever since. And while it is a BIG purchase, it was something that I viewed as being a good investment for the blog. To be able to style looks with a current season purse, to carry it to events - blogging does involve some shopping, so I was really reeeeally trying to justify taking the plunge.

But since I don't like to just accumulate things and #spendspendspend, I re-opened my online shop to try to offset not only the cost, but to make room for another purchase in my small house. I don't have a ton of storage, so recycling and reselling clothing is a must for me. It's better for the environment and prevents me from becoming a total magpie with a pile of shoes and shiny objects.

So last week, while I was in the middle of selling / cleaning out my closet with the vague notion of buying a new purse, I happened to find myself near Wasteland and decided to pop in. Immediately I felt that rush of possibility. The thought that, really, anything could be on the shelves. Maybe that dress I saw 3 years ago that sold out in my size. Or else the perfect pair of vintage levis for a fraction of the price. And I remembered just why I prefer secondhand shopping; it's unpredictable. The possibilities are endless, and the deals are SO much better. I began to comb the racks and aisles, and that's when I saw it.

The bag.

rouje philou coat (sold out, similar here& here) / redone high rise ankle crop jeans (use this link for 20% off) / ganni shoes / maxmara purse

No, not THE Chloé Bag - given that the style has only been out for a few months, I wouldn't expect to find it marked down and gently used. No, I saw a bag that at once felt more me than any bag I've seen all year.

Now, I know this sounds #dramaticAF, but really, I was so elated. I'd been in the process of saving up for this spendy purchase, but in the back of my head had started to feel guilty about the price tag attached to it. I tried to ignore the feeling, but now I'm glad I didn't. I grew up with very little money. As an adult even a few years ago, I had very very little money. I have saved and saved since starting to blog, and while I'm in a better position than I was at my minimum wage desk job, I am by no means wealthy. I've been able to justify a few splurges here and there, but something in me always goes back to how it was before any of this blogging business, when I lived for the thrill of finding a deal secondhand.

And that's what made me so excited. Returning to my roots. Scoring a deal. Knowing I could turn the money that I had saved up into other things. An upcoming surgery for Mops. A cheap lunch-date with my husband. Rent money. Important things and silly things, but not a huge purchase that I know would make me queasy when I pressed the 'Purchase' button online and saw the receipt. Sure, I still absolutely love staring at photos of new designer bags online, and while it's fun to dream, there's that feeling that I don't want to lose.

The excitement of a deal. Saving money. Finding something gently used, and knowing that I get to be a part of recycling this bag or coat or shoes into a new wardrobe. The other feeling I don't want to lose? The excitement of a new item in my closet! There's something about watching bloggers unboxing a designer item and tearing through the tissue and casually showing their huge splurge like it's nothing that makes me a little sick. I know I've done it in the past, and I really hate how it's presented. Like this major major purchase is nothing. Like it's a given that we should have these things, when really? We are SO lucky. To get to style clothing and call it a job is unreal, and I refuse to lose the joy in that. I refuse to become so jaded that I don't recognize my extreme privilege. It's something I have to work on and consciously think about, but I just wanted to share with you all that I do think about these things.

And finally, about the bag, since I haven't really said what it is. It's a MaxMara purse from just this last year. Gently used, some scratches and a few pen marks, and in a croc-embossed leather. I even managed to find it online, brand new here. I got it for less than 1/4 of the original price, and that detail makes me absolutely giddy. And while it was an absolute steal, I'm glad that I still had to sit and debate it. I still had to really decide if I wanted to make the purchase, and if it would bring me joy. It makes me happy that I'm still who I started out as, just a girl looking for a thrill and a deal.
